Switching from typing to dictating my first draft helped me turn off my perfectionist tendencies that come out when I'm typing. I highly recommend trying this as an option for folks who are struggling with perfectionism when they're trying to type.

My FYP clocked me 😭 I definitely struggle with this. I even talked myself out of writing yesterday because of it. I'm gonna try this. my perfectionism IS SO HARD TO SHUT OFF but I'm gonna try. I just want to get something OUT

This was how I finished a short story two days ago. I have struggled all year to finish a short story. Two days ago I decided to write it as bad as I can. And I did. And I finished it.

I’ve written and published a lot of books and it still happens every book. 🤣 I have learned to push through, but it is definitely hard, you’re right. You have to let go of the first draft being perfect. One thing that helped me was dictating my first draft. And expect the fix it in the self editing stage.

In my first draft I intentionally leave behind notes in parentheses, start new paragraphs, write stuff out of order and do things you wouldn't have on your final draft SO that my brain doesnt think I have to make it perfect and that this is still the early stage of things. Think of it like a painters room during the early stages of the painting vs the painting hung up on the gallery wall. During the first stages, have stuff and things that belong to that stage, NOT the gallery stage! ☺️at least this works well with me ❤️🩹

I really want to give this a shot. I've tried the 'write something bad and then polish it later' tactic before and what it does is kill my motivation faster than slowly killing it with perfectionism. I only have fun writing when I'm a perfectionist about it but it switches from being fun to stressful eventually x__x I like these suggestions because they probably get closer to the root of the issue, it's impossible to just jump from full Perfectionist Mode to 'write something bad and then fix it eventually!'

The freedom to write 'garbage' is so liberating. If you can get out of your own head and let yourself be messy, you can let that perfectionism flex it's muscles in the revision stage. Takes a lot of repetition and it's a long road - but worth it!

I have been writing unintentional garbage daily, for a couple of months now😂 It is helpful in generating new ideas. I wrote 1000 words on one of them. I will play arpund with that now, thanks for your advice💖

I always remind myself that it's a first draft for a reason. I can always come back and make it good. Sometimes I just need to get ANYTHING down on the page.

Love this post and needed so badly. I went right on Amazon and bought the artists way —- I remember when it first came out in the 90s and it was all the rage

My issue is I hate to read and love to write and I think that is so weird. I don’t have the patience to read. I have severe adhd and when I read I hear myself talking and am picturing a movie playing. When I write I picture a movie.

i actually do this with my characters. i make their story not make sense and overtime i fill in the plot holes and make changes needed so it does make sense. i don't believe it has to be perfect and make sense automatically. i allow my writting to be bad before it can be good

My case is a little different. I start great and after a couple of pages I go through I love it then fear to continue. Fear I won’t match the quality. It’s a strange one for me like writing more will poison what I’ve just done

One of the technique I do when I'm flooded with many ideas, is that I make a draft for each scenario, and I will then incorporate it with the main story. I don't know if it works for other tho.

morning pages might fix more than my actual writing tbh. I'm so hyper aware of judgement and being perceived as bad at anything, that the idea of someone finding my "bad" writing makes my skin crawl. its such a huge deal for me to allow myself to be bad at anything, so this feels like it doubles as a therapy tool for me.
