Belts don't stretch, they get thinner in the V area where the pulley contacts the belt. This causes the belt to ride deeper in the pulley groove, causing it to slip and making it seem like it has stretched. Great video.

If belts stretched mechanics would be tightening car belts all the time.

you can clearly see that the old belt is sitting deeper in the "pulleys" of the the measuring devic, which would make it read longer. The old belt was probably a 78.5 or 79" belt originally

All belts are not the same. Mowers use a Kevlar belt and automotive belts are rubber on the outside. The mowers need some slippage where automotive don’t need slippage.

I'll go ½" either way all the time with no issues whatsoever.
Belts don't stretch, but tensioner springs do.

That’s cool. I’m not looking for a smaller belt but if I was Amazon will be happy to take the money instead and sell me whatever size I want for whatever reason.

I put the same “size” belt on my lawnmower but it wasn’t OEM and I guess something is slightly different with it so now I don’t have neutral anymore. It’s either forward or reverse and always moving when it’s running.

Because that old belt wasn't flopping around if it was it would measure longer because it will seat deeper in the sheaves 😏 If you look up the OEM, Rotary, and Stens the lengths are usually different because the way the seat in the pulley so Yes a longer or shorter belt can fit depending on the width pitch of the belt.

Just mad that snowblowers all use some dumb non standard belt length just so I have to buy it from the manufacturer at twice or more than the cost of a Dayco or whatever would be if they had just used a standard length. Jerks.

Is there a backyard fix to extend life of worn out belt? Scrape w sandpaper to deglaze? Melt glue on it or somehow re-tread the inside? Sometimes it either but the wrong belt or rehab old one for a few more cuts.
