One thing I think we get wrong in Ghana is that we treat maintenance like something we do after everything has already gone bad. The gutter is completely blocked. The road is already damaged. The public space is already dirty. Then we react. But imagine if certain areas actually had people responsible for maintaining them consistently. Not random clean-ups once in a while. Actual jobs. Proper equipment. Defined areas. Clear responsibilities. And accountability when the work isn’t being done. That’s why I respect what the Buz Stop Boys are doing. They’re a youth-led sanitation group that has been going into communities and physically doing the work instead of just complaining about the problem. But groups like this also raise a bigger question: How do we turn that kind of energy into systems that actually work at scale? Because cleaning one gutter is good. Making sure somebody is responsible for keeping that gutter clear for the next five years is even better. And there are real questions that would have to be solved — who pays for it, which institution manages it, how workers are trained, how performance is measured and how you stop it from becoming another programme where people get paid but nobody checks the work. That’s the conversation I think we should be having. And the more people with platforms talk about practical issues like sanitation, maintenance and public services, the harder they are to ignore. Big respect to @buzstopboys🌀official for showing what taking responsibility can look like. 🇬🇭 Save this post if you think this is a conversation worth coming back to, and follow @kwetheone for more conversations about Ghana, business, opportunities and the things we can improve. 🇬🇭 What do you think: could a proper area-by-area maintenance programme actually work in Ghana? #ghana #africa #africandiaspora #sanitation
