 A flight crew member slowly turns the propeller of a twin-engine turboprop by hand after the aircraft has shut down. Although it may look unusual, this is a maintenance practice used on certain turbine-powered aircraft during engine cool-down. After shutdown, the upper portion of a hot turbine engine can remain warmer than the lower portion because heat naturally rises. Rotating the propeller turns the internal shaft, helping distribute heat more evenly, encouraging more uniform cooling, and allowing the crew to feel for any unusual resistance while the engine is stationary. Reducing temperature differences inside the engine helps minimize the risk of temporary shaft bowing, which can contribute to vibration or internal blade rub during a subsequent start.
