Helm’s Deep, Gimli being reduced to a punchline, and Faramir not being Faramir are the only three gripes I have with the movies. Most other changes make sense, but those really irked me.

The reason Aragorn and Gandalf want theoden to ride out in Rohan is because the Uruk hai there are not a full standing force and the Rohirrim could save many more villages from destruction. By going to helms deep they allow Saruman to focus all of his energy into one single point and destruction. They don’t have the rohirrim or a full army to defend the deep but they have a guerilla force to attack and run. Aragorns objections also serve a story telling purpose for later when he calls upon the king to ride out and meet them on the battlefield again on the third day.

Elrond does have foresight, it’s possible we the viewer are to think Elrond foresaw an evil host heading to Edoras and called upon Galadriel to send aid to Edoras as Imladris was fighting battles from attacks from Sauron as well

I do think the elves are from rivendell. elrond is a seer. so I think the elves arriving at helms deep is due to him being able to see them needing the troops in advance. I am torn on whether I like the addition of elves in the movies because it changes theodens character arc a bit when he decides to ride to gondors defense. tho I do like both choices

I have had this argument a dozen times defending Theoden. He clearly is making the right choices strategically. Not only that, he chooses to do all this after being bewitched and waking up to tremendous loss and is in my opinion the lynchpin for the militaristic victories of men in the second and third movies and still absolutely essential in the books. Hes the goat.

The Elves showing up is even weirder if you consider that not only were they so far away, but in the canon timeline they were preparing for (if not already dealing with?) *THE FIRST OF THREE* joint attacks from Moria and Dol Guldur. But they won handily because Galadriel knows how to get it done
