think it’s because everyone is dealing with the after effects of last season? marcus’s death, river’s father, jk clearly suffers with mental issues regarding his time in psych, catherine is limited by jackson’s constant jibes in her direction, even claude and di are in the dark because they truly don’t know what’s going on until it’s almost too late, flyte is pushed aside by di for what happened with river’s dad last season, everyone is recuperating differently and it’s showing as a result! just my opinion!

River was a terrible agent this season because his grandad was mainly why he was successful in earlier seasons- always giving him insight into the next steps to take. he ignored him most this season/didn't have his help and as a result he suffered from it. when he finally saw his grandpa, he of course received insight into the situation and finally did something valuable. the contrast is there. River is good on his feet at times but lacks serious critical thought

i don’t think people realise that river isnt a “hero”. he thinks he is james bond and will throw himself into danger if it means he gets recognition, you’ll see what i mean in future seasons

River is dealing with the fallout from his granddad’s Alzheimers (a man who was his father figure). He also lost Louise at the beginning. He’s so desperate to prove he’s better than Slough House and get back to the park he keeps tripping himself up. I thought this was a strong series!

The entire point of the slow horses is that they are flawed - vulnerable. River is good but his fatal flaw is his belief that his instinct to do right is always correct. He need Jackson. It’s like the entire team are coming to terms with their our frailty. It’s the perfect set up for the next season
