Lorenzo was the elder and more politically astute ruler, and was known as “the Magnificent,” while Giuliano was the younger and more athletic brother, known as the "golden boy.” Their joint rule ended abruptly when Giuliano was murdered in the 1478 Pazzi Conspiracy. He was only twenty-four. While the assassination was an attempt on both brothers, Lorenzo survived. His brother’s death left Lorenzo grief-stricken and transformed the ruler into a more ruthless and cynical ruler. It profoundly affected his political strategies as he became increasingly wary of potential threats to his authority and took steps to consolidate Medici control over Florence.
