Yes, this is true. But I also know the average wages in Spain are extremely low and how servers often don't actually make a living wage. So it doesn't feel good. I get not feeding into tipping culture, but let's not pretend servers are doing well.

Most waiters get a decent salary and benefits. Some places where tourism has americanized the industry are different and emphasize seasonal work -contratos basura- that doesn’t pay well. Unions have been fighting this.

And also in Spain, you have to ask for the check they will not bring you or just drop off a check. Also, in Spain, they will never take your credit card away from the table. They will bring a machine to the table and then you can process the payment. Unlike the US when you’re like encouraged to leave by when they drop off the check and you didn’t ask for it.
