Matt :
So if a gene is like an element then an allele is like an isotope. Thanks for this clarification, I'd never heard this before.

All of a sudden the concept of gene editing makes sense.

You see I wish I could say this too my family but they think I’m insane and overly obsessed with genetics. LIKE ITS NOT A GENE ITS AN ALLELE AHHHHHGGG

I do a lot of domestic animal genetics explaining and I try to use the term gene variant instead of allele because I've found it trips people up 😅 definitely a good point to clarify for people between genes vs alleles

HERE for this. I ALWAYS have students ask about the difference and use the words interchangeably and I completely agree about the public communication element here! ❤

Ok, so it’s like a particular gene is a car and the alleles are the different brands and models?

To help my freshman bio kids understand, I tell them that ‘soda’ is a gene, and Sprite, Mt. Dew, Coke, Diet Coke, etc. are alleles.

This is also true for blood groups! It’s not just ABO; there are hundreds of blood groups! But only some are clinically relevant. Such like only certain alleles are clinically relevant!

Wow—I’ve been writing about biochem and genetics for YEARS and I never thought to make that distinction!! That’s so intuitive and makes so much more sense. It’s so weird how some parts of the science become like background noise that you forget about while exploring the “deeper” topics. Huge video.

I had never thought about the implications of this but in retrospect, so many of my comments include “I have the gene” and I’d never thought to correct them, but I agree the semantics is actually very important. Thanks so much for sharing!

This is so important for understanding evolution as well! The variation in alleles leads to different phenotypes, which can eventually make a population more fit as a whole as beneficial alleles get passed down and unhelpful alleles go extinct. One of my favorite concepts is the conservation of important genes shared in almost all of life
