It’s so that instead of having three different sizes of lids, there’s one size of lid that fits all three sizes of hot cup. They did the same for the cold cups too. Just to cut down on production and waste. They did this over a year ago.

as a barista i would ask for a tall in a grande cup! its no extra upcharge, and will definitely fit better!!

I’m a starbucks barista: it’s because they wanted to have one size of lid for all the hot drinks (except short) because the company was losing money having to manufacture three different sizes. Also for us, the lids look exactly the same so people would wash them if they tried to put a grande/venti lid on a tall. if you do that, you have to throw the lid away for health and safety reasons. it’s annoying but honestly, for us, it makes our job easier.
