A Hologram for the King was not filmed in Mecca; the scenes depicting Mecca were filmed in Morocco, with a separate Muslim crew filming the few scenes actually set in Jeddah and Mecca. While a Muslim crew filmed in Saudi Arabia, Tom Hanks was filmed in Morocco to create the illusion that he was there.
