@af3saana: Kathak was not created as entertainment, it was born in the temples of Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism). Its very name comes from “Katha”, meaning “story,” and “Kathakar”, the storyteller those who danced to narrate the divine tales of Lord Krishna, Shiva, and Devi through rhythm, mudras, and devotion. Over centuries, as invaders entered India, many temple traditions were banned or repurposed under royal courts. The sacred art of Kathak once performed barefoot before deities was transformed to suit courtly tastes, stripped of its divine intention, and placed before kings instead of God. This isn’t cultural evolution it’s distortion. Kathak is Hindu/Sanatani only. Its gestures come from Hindu scriptures, its stories from the Bhagavata Purana, and its purpose is bhakti, devotion. Anyone in the world can dance Kathak, but it will forever remain Hindu. To erase that truth is to erase the very spirit that created it. When we call it “just Indian” or remove its dharmic roots, we are abandoning the very ancestors and storytellers who kept this art alive through centuries of suppression en enabling the disrespect this sacred Hindu dance went through. Kathak is not Islamic. In Islam music and dance are forbidden along with imitating non believers. This is a Hindu dance only and a way of worship. This is not hatred against Muslims, this is persevering our beautiful Hindu dance which went through centuries of misuse and disrespect. #sanatanadharma #hinduism #hindu #kathak #dance

The 13th-century text Sangitaratnakara describes a whirling movement called Cakramandala, used in worship, showing early roots of spins in Hindu traditions. In Kathak, specific types of spins (chakkars) and related movements are named after Hindu deities or concepts, highlighting the dance form's spiritual roots: Tandav Chakkar: This is a powerful and energetic spin sequence, directly inspired by the Tandava, the vigorous cosmic dance of Lord Shiva (the Hindu god of destruction and creation). It involves strong footwork and a powerful presence, often used in fast-tempo rhythmic segments. Lasya Chakkar: This spin is considered the feminine counterpart to the Tandav, inspired by Lasya, the graceful, gentle dance style associated with the goddess Parvati (Shiva's consort) and performed by women. It is fluid and delicate, typically featured in slower, more expressive sections of the dance. Chakramandala: An ancient Sanskrit text from the 13th century, the Sangitaratnakara, mentions a dance movement called 'Cakramandala', which involves rapid whirling like a wheel while keeping the arms in the Dola pose. This movement was employed in the worship of gods and in vigorous dance sections. Pavan Perryi / Ura Chakra: These names, sometimes used for specific types of spins, relate to natural and conceptual Hindu elements. "Pavan" means wind or air, while "Ura" implies a lifting or soaring quality (as in Urdhva Hasta Chakra, meaning upward hand spin), reflecting the dynamic and often airy nature of the turns. The stories of Radha and Krishna also form the core theme of much of Kathak's narrative (Bhava) aspect, and while specific spins might not be directly named "Krishna Chakkar," the entire devotional context and many expressive pieces (Gat Bhav) are centered around the stories and love of these deities.
