My kid is wearing my 30 year old Snow White costume I wore in college. Why are we throwing them away? I have a tub in my basement full of costumes and I have given ones that don’t fit away or sold them on the marketplace.

My mom has been sewing for as long as I can remember (I’m 55). I never learned and hated it when I tried. I wish so much that I would’ve learned anyway. She has Alzheimers and can’t sew. I could be helping her now but I can’t. 😭

ive made everyone of my own Halloween costumes but that's not to say I haven't bought mass produced costume items. I will repair or tailor those pieces and keep them in a tickle trunk for anyone to use or borrow.

Mine costume this year! I had most of the pieces on hand, thrifted others, and I made the ears. The gloves were new but I’ll use them again.

I made my skirt and hat and I’m on year two of re-using it! The downside is, sewing is intimating and does take some skill - so I think that’s why the average household isn’t doing it anymore. Not to mention raw materials are just as expensive as buying a Walmart costume…. So for low income families, it’s a hard pill to swallow I think

I cosplay as a hobby so I always have a closet ready for Halloween and just touch stuff up as October comes. and when I buy costumes they are kept long term. I made a Elphaba act 2 gown and she's been my go to most Halloweens for almost 10 years now. and she's being worn again this year

We make our own costumes over here! Either make them from scratch or assemble from vintage finds, or things already in our closet. I know it’s a privilege to have the time and skill to do so, but it’s so worth it!
