My mil talked all about what she’s serving for thanksgiving. And when hubby told her she hadn’t invited us…. “Well I just can’t do anything right, now can I!!!”

Let me guess, you decide to actually go over and it turns out she didn’t do any of that and she “thought it would convince you to come” 😭

My other favorite is that when you flat out tell them no to something multiple times and yet when the day comes it was a yes and you’re in the wrong.

“I just want Thanksgiving and Christmas at my house like it always used to be!” Oh you mean before your four sons all got married to women who ALSO have families with traditions?

My grandmother used to do stuff like this to my parents. Typically she would say something like I’m thinking about cooking dinner on Sunday. And that was the invitation to the entire family to show up on Sunday for dinner.

why can't they just communicate! my mom likes to play "guess what this means" and make up her own sign language. Even if I say, "I don't understand, can you use words?" she'll double down "oh come on, you can figure it out!" *does it again*

"if I'm still alive" triggered me soooo hard. but my inlaws are the queens of "we dont do family stuff anymore" and yet gate keeping ALL the events from us. tell me who is keeping my kid away again?

retirement gives them too much time to invent problems. trust me I work with retired volunteers and it's like having 20 problematic parents but at your job everyday!!!

My mother told me not to come over for Christmas because she wanted a 'quiet Christmas' (and i have five kids).
I understood and harboured no negative feelings on the matter.
She invited my sister and her family over (husband and three kids) and while they were there, complained that I didnt show up.
My sister ducked away and called me to ask what the go was because when it comes to our mother, we conference with each other and dont believe what she says on face value.
I told her what the situation really was, she told her husband, they stayed for two hours and then spent the rest of Christmas day with me and mines! ❤👏

This is a shining example of ask culture versus guest culture. Boomer mom is 100% guest culture, they run on the assumption that everybody is aware of what's happening and just assumes you know as well. that is so infuriating!

My mother started cooking dinner on Thursdays, at my parents house. Was told it was “come and go as your time allows”. 2nd week I got called asking why I wasn’t at dinner and everyone was waiting on my family. So much for come and go as your time allows.
