Yesterday was a day filled with both celebration and heartbreak. We celebrated my firstborn turning 15—an incredible milestone that reminded me just how quickly the years pass. But on that same day, I also had to say goodbye to Maria, the dog who spent the last 17 years by my side and saw me through every version of myself—from my mid-twenties to my early forties. I rescued Maria during my third year of law school in Naples, Florida. She had been running loose around campus for several days before someone finally caught her. I immediately scooped her up from the campus bookstore and said, “I’ll take care of her until we find her owners.” I took her to the vet and learned that she wasn’t microchipped. They initially couldn’t reach her owners, and when they finally did, the owners said they didn’t want her back. The vet estimated that Maria was about a year old. She had already experienced a difficult beginning—she was underweight and tested positive for heartworms. But none of that deterred me. I had very little money as a law student, but I spent what I had to get her the treatment she needed. And she thrived. Maria was with me through my final year of law school, studying for and taking the bar exam, becoming an attorney, becoming a mother several times over, and every triumph, heartbreak, change, and ordinary day in between. She didn’t simply witness my life. She was woven into it. I know how incredibly fortunate I was to have 17 years with her. So many people never get that much time with their pets. But saying goodbye to someone who has walked beside you through three different decades of your life is one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. Maria, I love you more than you could ever know. You will never understand how much I needed you. Perhaps I needed you even more than you needed me. Thank you for growing up with me. Thank you for loving every version of me. Thank you for being part of my life for 17 beautiful years. I honestly cannot remember a time when Maria wasn’t there—and learning how to live in a world without her feels impossible. I know you ran straight across the Rainbow Bridge, and I know Snoopie was waiting there for you. Until we meet again, please say hello to Snoopie, Charlie, Thor, and Juice for me. I will love you always and miss you forever, Maria.
