GrayGracob :
We know America isn’t a country. “American” has come to mean “citizen of the United States of America” because it’s shorter, a nickname, if you will, and other countries in South, Central, and North America have individual names - like, say, Mexico, Canada, Paraguay, Chile, etc. - and are not referred to as Canada of North America, or Chile of South America, for example. “American” is a noun or adjective reserved for the United States of America, because we are a bunch of states, united via government and (mostly) geography, in the Americas.
