We know America isn’t a country. “American” has come to mean “citizen of the United States of America” because it’s shorter, a nickname, if you will, and other countries in South, Central, and North America have individual names - like, say, Mexico, Canada, Paraguay, Chile, etc. - and are not referred to as Canada of North America, or Chile of South America, for example. “American” is a noun or adjective reserved for the United States of America, because we are a bunch of states, united via government and (mostly) geography, in the Americas.

Just to play devils advocate, technically Mexico is United States of Mexico and no one ever says that full name, so does the same logic apply here?

Continent aside, no other country has "America" in its name. And people from central/south america do not call themselves American

The best equivalent is “someone from the States”. Its a colonizer mindset nit that school failed us, sadly.

The other issue is that in the US we learn that there are 7 continents. Other places learn 5 continents.

America is in our country's name so unless you're in a formal situation it's easier to say American. I don't think anyone else on the American continent uses America in their name right?

Same in French we can also say États-unien / États-unien but it’s just easier to say Américain / Américaine

It's not different than calling people from Mexico Mexican when they are the United States of Mexico. The term used is American! Isn't the translation of estadounidense just United States so you are just calling us the country?

I have NEVER thought about someone referring to anywhere else other than the US when they say they’re America. The other parts are the “Americas” but that doesn’t refer to them being “American” because an American is literally a nationality of those from the US. So idk what you’re saying doesn’t make much sense.

American refers specifically to people from the United States bc the US has the word America in the title and its the most unique part of the name. Other places have the term United States, but noone else has America. I would never call someone Brazilian "American", if I had to I could use South American, but that is a broad term I wouldn't use unless the person is mixed or I dont remember what specific country they are from. Even then, Im more like to use Latino/a bc that word refers to Latin America. We also would not use American to refer to North, Central, and South America because those are three regions with fairly different cultures and its too much of an overgeneralization to say American.

American is a coloqial term for us citizen. Like when Caribbean people West Indies or West Indian they are not talking about the west of India. Even non- us citizens call us citizens Americans.

In english we also say mexican even though its the united states of mexico. Same pattern. Also absolutely no one else in the americas refer to themselves as simply american so you are trying to prevent confusion that doesnt exist

America, as do many words, has multiple meanings. Did your school system fail you? America, in Spanish-speaking countries and a few others, refers to North, Central, and South America. In the rest of the world, America refers to the US. The United States of America=America. United Mexican States=Mexico. When someone is from Argentina or Guatemalan, they do not introduce themselves as “American”. When people hear “American”, they pretty much assume the US. Travel abroad…you’ll see. It is the only country with America in the name…ergo, its people are “Americans”.

U.S. culture indoctrinates the Estado Unidenses to believe they are the only ones that matter on the continent, so they ignore everyone else and see only themselves as American
