I validate her. some people want a particular type of dog. there is nothing wrong with getting a dog from a breeder. I got my dog from a family friend. and luckily it worked for me. but if he was with a different person who knows.

Most shelters can tell you if the dogs are good around children or not 🤷🏼♀️and you don’t need a dog

Even pure bread dogs can have behavior problems and just because the sister paid for a trainer doesn’t mean she is keeping up with the training.

No, She is completely valid for this choice as someone who has an adopted dog. They can be a handful no matter how much training and their health can be more unpredictable. Not everyone has the right home or temperament for an adopted dog.

my family have gotten shelter dogs all my life we literally had “shelter” dogs when i was born, ig its not a good fit if you don’t wanna put in the work, all you have to do is train them & teach your kids with boundaries with animal or idk don’t get a dog lol

As a kid we had a dog that we got from a breeder that he just bit people, his sister from the same litter also did; the best listening and most patient dog I’ve ever owned is from a rescue. She’s making excuses for spending a ton on a dog

My great grandparents were given a German shepherd puppy when they were in their seventies that their son bought from a credible breeder. It was sent to training multiple times but the obedience training was thrown out the window when the dog got home. I never had an issue with the dog being aggressive but they did because they never corrected the dog the way the trainer told them to. I made sure to correct the dog in a way that a trainer or educated dog owner would. They euthanized the dog but I still believe the dog didn’t have a fair chance. They made the mistake of not following the training so the dog did what it knew it could to get whatever it wanted. So no matter where you get the dog you need to do research on their behaviors and training. Also meet the dog before finalizing the adoption to see if they work well for your family.

My adopted dog is chill and is the kind of dog non dog people love. My sister in laws expensive pure bred is a menance and needs a muzzle to go to the vet. I’d rather adopt an older dog who had a known temperament.

You certainly can test out dogs even if you get one from a breeder they will take it back. It’s in a contract. Every rescue & shelter will take the dog back.

As someone who is not only a dog trainer of 20+ years but also worked in rescue just as long, spent many hours and time dedicated to working and helping rescue dogs. She is absolutely right-not everyone wants or should feel the need to risk their child's safety with a dog with unknown history. Getting a dog from a reputable breeder gives you a medical history and temperment history of both the parents and gives you a much better chance of knowing and preparing. Is there still a risk? Sure but a hell of a lot less. Adopt or shop responsibly. Now in her case missing a mortgage payment for a dog, she should not have got a dog in the first place unless she was financially stable-rescue or not.
