If you didn’t have an epidural you didn’t have to have a cervical check! They only make you do them when you have an epidural! Or at least that’s what my hospital said. I didn’t want an IV or cervical checks and then I said I wanted an epidural after 20 excruciating hours and I had to get an IV and checks.

As much as i hated it, im so glad they did a final check. If they didnt they wouldnt have felt that my cervix closed back to 8cm around my babys head and that i had to be rushed immediately to an emergency c section

Trust me you do not want a cervical tear. I got one with my son who was turned wrong and ripped my cervix and vagina all the way out. I don’t even know how many stitches I had to get after and recovery was traumatizing

Listen… labor nurse here and if I visibly see a head, I just call.. like no need to shove a hand in there but SOMETIMES we can be 10cm but baby is still not technically low or underneath the pubic bone so sometimes that can guide us in if we need to do certain positions to facilitate the baby to come naturally down before pushing, pushing, pushing. It’s circumstantial and different per person and not a one size fits all. I’m sorry! Usually epidurals are where we need to help but if you’re all natural, no epidural… then I always trust you can feel and know hahaha I will have a glove ready 💪

Girlllll I feeeeel you! My water broke across the room, my body started pushing, and the on call OB came in and said “ sorry legally you have to be a 10 before you can push so turn on your back.” I was ready to punch that chick but I did it anyways. She didn’t even touch me just started saying “ yep yep baby is coming”. Well no duh Sherlock 😂😂

you can always refuse, however, if you push and theres still cervix present...your cervix will tear and you will end up in the OR...and youll go there before you can actually get to spend time with your baby.

You always have right to refuse, however, I can tell you I've seen many women who felt "ready to push" that were actually like 1-2 cm dilated .... hard to know for sure without an exam 🙃

we need to be more honest with ourselves about what we're up against why would you push without knowing how dilated you are? I can understand the refusal before being in active labor.. but can you imagine pushing at 7cm because you refused? that's insane

I had a pt decline a check for pushing. She pushed for 4 hrs before letting someone assess her pushing. In total she pushed 7 hrs bc she didn’t want guidance.

Because if you push before you're fully dilated you can tear your cervix, which can hemorrhage liters of blood in minutes and sometimes needs to be repaired back in the OR under anesthesia 😅

You have the right to refuse, but I’ve had a patient threaten that she was going to start pushing if she didn’t get her epidural or pain meds and she was only 7 cm. Got her an epidural and she delivered 3 hours later. The risk of cervical tear is HUGE if you push when you’re not full dilated.

I had patients tell me they felt like they had to push and they were like 7 centimeters dilated, or their effacement is like 50%💀 Please for your own sake make sure you’re complete before you start pushing!

with my second, he had shoulder dystocia, and because of that, my body started pushing on its own at 8 cm. he was out just 7 minutes later but i’m so thankful my doctor checked me when i said my body was pushing. because of that quick decision, they were able to get him out safely without any injuries. i’m incredibly grateful for the doctors who acted fast. and this is coming from a mom who goes unmedicated, labors squatting, and planned to give birth standing but sometimes our plans change to protect us 💕

We used to get home birth transfers all the time who had been pushing on a cervix not fully dilated. Their cervixes were always so swollen that they stopped dilating and had to get a csection 😫

I declined to a very rude and pushy midwife who just shoved her fingers in me without even asking or explaining I had to physically grab her hand out of me because she didn’t listen when I said please no and stop. Delivered my baby without any assistance 15 minutes later

As someone who was told to “practice push” at 9cm and ended up with a cervical laceration, it is important that you’re dilated the whole way before pushing. The hemorrhaging that happened as a result of it made my recovery so difficult.

I was almost to 10 cm but I wasn’t completely thinned so I had to fight the urge to push “ I went unmedicated” hardest thing ever but luckily in a few minutes I was finally able to push

because we have to be sure it’s the full 10, pushing on an incomplete cervix could give you lacerations and increase your risk of severe bleeding, i can understand feeling like it was time but as the doctor or nurse we have to check. mind you someone can be 10 cm and baby still a little high so instead of having you push longer we let your baby labor down. i promise it isn’t to force you not to push, we do it for a reason

I went from 6cm to pushing in less than 10 minutes. She did 2 cervical checks in that time. Once to see was at 6, and once to see I was 10 and ready to push

They asked me if I wanted checked and I said no. Turned around for hands and knees and everyone saw a crowning baby 🤣 mad dash around the room as he shot out in 1 “push” definitely will decline next time. Not like they can stop my FER
