@earthlinghouse: 🌾 There’s No Such Thing as a Bad Plant 🌿 We love to label certain plants as “weeds” — gorse, broom, bracken — and see them as invaders or problems to be destroyed. But here’s the truth: these plants are all native to Ireland, and they’re not invading… they’re healing. 🌍💚 Plants like gorse and broom are pioneer species, nature’s first responders to damaged land. They fix nitrogen, build soil, create organic matter, and provide shelter for young trees — setting the stage for forests to return. 🌳 When we cut or burn them, we’re really just interrupting that healing process, fighting against the natural cycle of ecological succession. In my food forest, I actually plant pioneers — broom, seaberry, alder, birch, and willow — to accelerate regeneration and create a living, self-sustaining system where fruit trees can thrive. 🍏 These plants don’t “take over” forever — once their job is done and the forest matures, they naturally fade away. Next time you see gorse or bracken spreading, remember: they’re not the enemy.
