I feel like SM added Yeri as an experiment, like she would always be in the group. SM debuted Red velvet to see how they would do with only 4 members. They got 0 wins for their debut and their second song and their debut already had controversies. Then SM added Yeri and Icecream cake got 6 wins and the group exploded and continued growing fast. It was probably all a marketing tactic
