But what if my partner shuts down after 30 seconds (they are currently struggling with intense depression) and doesn’t talk for 3 hours?

My husband and I have a rule that we have to eat something and drink a cup of water before arguing. It’s made a huge difference

What about if every time you have a conflict it always becomes a conversation about how we handle/ communicate through the conflict which just escalates it more than the original conflict?

Susie :
Sometimes I forget other people “fight” by yelling or doing some other form of communication rather than giving each other the silent treatment for a week and a half until there’s some unrelated reason that forces you to communicate and then you just go back to talking like normal as if nothing ever happened without ever actually resolving anything.

Wait. So what you are saying is that there is a segment of the population able to listen, reason, and problem solve for 20 minutes.

Your videos have helped me so much with understanding human relationships (not only romantic). It should be taught in school and then maybe the world would be a better place and everyone would treat each other with more respect.

I agree with this rule, over the years I’ve realized the longer we argue the longer my body needs to recover from the stress

We always wait until our emotions regulate, and then bring rational conversation to the table. Our arguments never last more than 20 minutes, even if it takes us 2 hours to start the conversation

in that 30 min do not sit talking to yourself or friends about how right you are how wrong they are .... your " vent" continues to flood your brain as if the fighting is still on

I always liked to ask for space, I’d tell my partner I’m upset and want to talk about it but to give me an hour to calm down and think about what I want to say so that there’s no yelling or hurtful words

Jeff I love your content. Very helpful. But I have to ask.. is anyone else out there doing research other than the Gottman institute? I can’t recall hearing any other source cited by anyone, like ever.
