Excessive Data Exposure APIs that return more data than necessary — relying on clients to filter it — give adversaries easy access to sensitive information. 3. Inadequate Rate Limiting Without strict request throttling, APIs can be exploited for brute force attacks, credential stuffing, or large-scale data scraping. 4. Shadow & Zombie APIs Untracked, deprecated, or undocumented APIs (often from earlier development cycles) create blind spots in security monitoring. 5. Insufficient Authentication & Authorization Weak or inconsistent identity enforcement across microservices opens the door for privilege escalation and unauthorized access. 6. Injection & Parameter Tampering Unsanitized inputs can lead to SQL, NoSQL, or command injections — a major risk in APIs that accept user-provided data. Securing APIs in an API-First World * Adopt a “Secure by Design” Approach: Embed security testing in the development lifecycle, not after deployment. * Implement Zero Trust for APIs: Authenticate and authorize every request, even within internal networks. * Follow the OWASP API Security Top 10: Treat it as your API security baseline, not a checklist. * Use API Gateways & WAFs: Enforce access control, data filtering, and anomaly detection at the gateway level. * Continuously Monitor & Audit APIs: Maintain an accurate API inventory and track usage patterns to detect anomalies early. * Apply the Principle of Least Privilege: Limit API access to the minimum scope and permissions necessary.
