my sister has long natural red hair and one day a woman on the streets asked her for the hair she find in her brush, she would do jewellery out of them. since then my sister collects and send her hair to said woman.

I have two pieces of hairwork. A watch chain that was my grandfather’s (I think that one is made from horse hair) and a pendant that I got made from my own hair as a child

I don’t find it icky the Victorians were expert level in the art of grieving a lost loved one and this is one of the ways they commemorated them. I find jewellery like this so heart breaking but touching as it was a lovely way to honour their loss. It’s just different to how we do things today.

My dad grew out his hair for a bit and I asked him to give me the clippings if he ever went short again and he remembered and gave them to me. I just need my mom to let me cut a strand of hers so I can make a locket with both of their hair woven together

In a time when photography was in its infancy and incredibly expensive, as was portraiture, the hair jewelry was one of the few ways to have a memento of the deceased when they’re likeness was gone. Hair color doesn’t change once it’s been cut off.

This pattern resembles the open lace braids from the art of Hairwork, Mark Campbell, 1875. Below is the most recent bracelet I've made using Victorian Tablework which will have been the method used for the bow xx

This is another version. This was a family heirloom that was revered and passed down and eventually given as an engagement ring to a woman who had no idea what it even was. When she discovered the meaning she didn’t love the ring anymore.
