As one who finished a Ph.D many years ago in math ed, you’re #3 is most important and very true. Working full time and being a full time grad student was mentally draining. At this time, I learned what panic attacks were. As for #2, getting a Ph.D rules your life and makes a social life more challenging. But I did have significant others during grad school. For #1, there are ways to work in the trade while attending grad school. It worked for me as a public educator. I may have been lucky, however.

I’m scared wanting to be a PHD student that I won’t be able to make some crazy math discovery, I know it doesn’t need to be like Euler, but I want to HELP and I’m scared that’s not enough

People don’t pursue a PhD for strictly financial reasons. My dear friends multiple have PhD’s. They thoroughly enjoyed their graduate studies as did I and I think they find a life worth living because they are making contributions to the world. To equate all of this to your bank account, I think seems callous.

Yeah but you could go to Med School and spend time hating being a doctor. Six of the students in my MBA Program were career changing docs.

In Canada, not all PhD students are fully funded.

Anyone smart enough to pursue a PhD in a STEM field should get an MD. No thesis, 4yrs, and a guaranteed job when you graduate. Ok, you may not like it …. But how many of us really love our work?

I didn’t know I could have bypass the MS in engineering and straight to the PhD program. My university offered to fund everything. I would to teach at the university for five years after graduation. They saw something I couldn’t see, so I declined.

It’s hard to teach *and* do research simultaneously successfully per my son and his math friends. He’s a third year phd student at Duke. Happy holidays. Keep up the great posts!

the combination of the three also means that it's really hard to focus on any kind of personal development. Working independently also limits your opportunities for professional development in that time.

I got mine in math in 4 years ending 1970. The U has inflated time requirements because the grad students are cheap labor. More than 5 years is abuse. Bio is maybe the worst

PhDs are dying. The reward to life toll is not worth it. Even if you end up in industry, companies rarely assign PhDs to lead development programs. PhDs are generally worthless except for teaching and we all know how impractical they are as they have no experience.

Don't worry about the opportunity cost of not owning Real Estate. Given the high levels of academic debt (basically a mortgage in itself), a thirty year fixed interest rate of at least 6.28%, and a huge down payment up front on your mortgage, if you are young and a first time home buyer...it is not feasible. You're screwed.
