of you don't print the ticket then the ticket might be refunded ..it was the way.. unsure if it is still the procedure... and they ticket inspectors are warranted authorised officers who can legally demand you produce a valid ticket for your journey.....you cannot board a train without a valid ticket...if there is a fault involved you must provide the details to the company not the officer...

A collection code isn’t a ticket, something that is pointed out at the time of booking, it’s his responsibility to make sure he has a valid ticket on demand at any point of his ticket. It’s not down to rail staff to do it for him. If he hasn’t allowed enough time, that’s on him. He is also required BY LAW to provide details when requested, he’s refused and has committed a criminal offence hence why he was arrested - not for the ticket issue.
