As a high school teacher, I’ve instituted something called “Functional Friday”. Every Friday we learn some life skills. Signatures, taxes, making appointments, applying to jobs, how health insurance works, handshakes, writing letters/cover letters, etc. I ask them at the beginning of the year for what they want to know and then I supplement it.

gen z has no tolerance for pointless tasks and time wasting. as an elder millennial we have wasted years of our lives doing totally pointless tasks because "someone said so". gen z needs a purpose for the task and they'll get it done.

I preach kids need to play organized sports, it’s a place where another adult coaches you and has expectations of you. There is so much to learn beyond the sport or band or whatever activity you kid enjoys.

I would add that besides repetition, the embarrassment of a non relative adult calling you out on something stays with you much longer/stronger than your parent telling you. It’s sad people don’t act like a village anymore.

I’ve also noticed that a lot of my gen z colleagues lack resourcefulness. Their idea of being resourceful is just inconveniencing another colleague by asking them questions they could have answered with Google, a quick peruse through training documents etc.

Gen Z campus recruiter here. I offered an internship to a Gen Z candidate, and she asked me if she could have a different internship (that she was rejected from), and asked me to pull strings for her. I was shocked.

I did a new job orientation with a bunch of Gen alpha. They were nonverbal and no eye contact. I was shocked. Just a room of silent people.

That’s just the thing though. Common sense is an umbrella term for everything that you shouldn’t need to be taught in order to know. If you need to be taught something by someone else, it’s not common sense.

Why is it so important that "kids these days" learn and follow the societal norms of the past? Someone commented that this generation is less observant and in my experience they are far more observant and are actively choosing to not practice these "norms". Why? Because they realize that most of the "rules" of society are performative and meaningless. Most are also rooted in religion, racism, and misogyny so personally I hold out hope that this generation I'm raising will be the change we need.

Every generation complains about the next one. I am Gen X and we were the slackers. Now we are somehow the butter, over-working curmudgeons. Each generation has new norms and the ones before it get mad it jsnt the same as theirs. Sometimes it really is just about experience.

This is an excellent thing to talk about. Schools are now having to explicitly teach things like this because “common sense” is gone. (This also affects the learning that should be happening because there is more to teach but not more time to teach it).

common sense isn't common. Gen z is more likely to create safe spaces among their peers. they don't adhere to dress codes, stuffy "social norms", and they demand more effective communication. in professional spaces, they're not willing to rollover on things that make them uncomfortable if they don't get in the way of a job. I like that the younger generations advocate for themselves.

idk. i’m on the older side of gen Z (in grad school and employed full time) and i’ve noticed that the people MOST on top of showing up early, making very polite conversation, meeting deadlines, answering emails quickly, giving dynamic presentations… are all under 30 at my job. There is 100% a discrepancy somewhere here, and i just hope that when people discuss gen z in the workplace they don’t factor in high schoolers and are talking solely about people 18 and up.
