@keepupwithkatie: My constant throat clearing is driving me crazy! Is it allergies or silent reflux? I need to figure it out! #silentreflux #throatcleaning #allergies
I’m a pulmonologist (lung doctor) and I see patients all the time with chronic cough and throat clearing. GERD is one of the top 3 causes of this, and is often silent like you mentioned. If you have bad allergies that can also contribute because it causes post-nasal drip down your throat which irritates it. Over time (and it sounds like you’ve had it for years), your larynx gets very inflamed and irritated and you can also get what’s called laryngeal hypersensitivity which essentially means it’s just extra sensitive and causes you to clear your throat more and then you’re just stuck in a cycle of it. Would recommend seeing probably an ear/nose/throat doctor (ENT).

I think acid reflux. You may be doing it more at night and not know. I would try something simple like pepcid OTC.

I have the same. I have gerd and even when under control, gerd creates sinus problems - or makes them worse - because the acid does actually migrate up, esp when sleeping. Also, uncleared fungal sinus issues ca make it worse. I don’t have other reflux symptoms either.

I’ve had this same issue for years, probably 20 years or more. Was told I had reflux. I have been on Prilosec, Pepcid, Nexium. I’ve tried Claritin, Allegra, Zyrtec for allergies. Last year I had an endoscopy which showed no GERD and I was taken off the reflux meds. I started an antidepressant last May which altered my taste buds so I haven’t drank any coffee for at least 6 months and the throat clearing hasn’t changed one bit. I almost always only drink water, every now and again I might have a Sprite. My voice is gravelly and gets worse by the end of the day. I routinely have to clear my throat during conversations because my voice kinda just goes out. The only thing I haven’t done is go to an ENT about it. That’s my next step. I’ve just been putting it off because I can’t stand the idea of them putting a scope down my throat or nose. I’m wondering if I might have lesions on my vocal cords or something. Did you ever get your issue resolved?

I had a dry cough for months and GP ordered chest xray and treated me for acid reflux and sinus. Didn’t help so did a ct scan and had a pulmonologist review it. The minute I started talking he could hear that I had post nasal drip. CT scan was clear. I had absolutely no congestion, and he said that isn’t unusual with post nasal drip. Just an annoying tickle. Eventually it went away.
