People who work for 111 are not medically trained. They are call centre staff on minimum wage using the NHS system. They used to work on the tables next to me during Covid. You’re best just using the NHS app yourself.

I just read about a cyclist in Oregon who got run over by an ambulance, they took him to hospital to get checked out, and he was billed $1800 for the ambulance ride.
I can't decide if I'm horrified, or impressed by the evil genius business model.

I’m from the UK and I have a lot of elderly friends that I have spent time waiting with for an ambulance. Probably 10 times in the last few years. Every single time the paramedics have been kind, personable, jokey, professional and helpful. It makes such a difference.

What are an amazing story. The NHS is phenomenal and the UK should be entirely proud of contributing to and maintaining it.
But you definitely have to do a story time on why you got electrocuted - glad you are ok.

Access to healthcare based on need and not ability to pay (or need to pay at point of care). . .this has saved so many lives.

Is it true that in the US you have to pay for the ambulance BUT ALSO on top of that, the mileage too??

I am sure in the majority of countries in the world you don't pay for an ambulance
Why is this the case there ?

This is exactly why we don't mind paying for the NHS. We all pay into it in the hopes of never needing it, but know that if we do its right there for us. I can't imagine having to worry about bills at what could be the worst or most traumatic moment in your life. I'd literally be dead multiple times over if it wasn't for the NHS. There's no way I could have paid by myself for everything they've done for me.

I came here for the comments about people claiming the NHS isn’t free, even though it’s free at the point of care… LOL.

Emergency care in the U.K. is very good, yes there can be long waits as it is based on need but if you have a serious issue and you need help you will get good care. Like I’m otherwise healthy but developed pre-eclampsia early, we in most other circumstances would have both not made it - we did, yeah I had to wait for 8 hours while I was triaged, then I was kept in and kept not just alive but got world-class care at no cost. People are under-educated as so how it works in US.

In the NHS it's in their interest for you to get your problem resolved so you don't have to come back later, in a private hospital they want you coming back more so they can make you pay more.

It’s very difficult to sue the nhs so usually the advice is pretty honest.

In a way you probably helped them paramedics with something easy and lighthearted. Especially compared to some of the tough stuff they see on a daily basis. Paramedics used to love taking my Grandma
