@Larry_Chen_Photo’s BMW E36 M3 is officially taking the next step — toward the 2026 SEMA Battle of the Builders. At the heart of the car is one of BMW’s most legendary engines: the European-spec S50B32, now being completely rebuilt by Tony and the team at VAC Motorsports. But there’s an even bigger story behind this engine. Paul has been building engines for an incredible 65 years. He started at just 15 years old and estimates he has built several thousand engines during his career — although even he has lost count. Watching the amount of measuring, machining, preparation and attention to detail that goes into this BMW engine build is a reminder that truly great engines aren’t simply assembled. They’re built by people who care about every single detail. The goal for this S50B32 is simple: 🏁 More performance 🏁 OE+ reliability 🏁 Precision machining 🏁 Proper engine clearances 🏁 CP forged pistons 🏁 A hand-built engine worthy of this E36 M3 To recognize the craftsmanship behind the build, Tony and Paul were asked to sign a special plaque that will be permanently attached to the engine — much like the builder plaques found on some of the world’s most prestigious hand-built performance engines. And now the story gets even bigger. The E36 M3 is being entered into the 2026 SEMA Battle of the Builders, taking place November 3–6 in Las Vegas. The build is also planned to be displayed with VAC Motorsports at the 2026 PRI Show, December 10–12 in Indianapolis. Follow the entire journey as VAC Motorsports takes this legendary BMW S50B32 from teardown and machining through final assembly — and ultimately toward SEMA.
