I was surprised how much shared experiences black and brown people have. My dad (71 year old Mexican American) worked in the fields picking cotton and watermelon when he was a kid. I didn’t even know that was still a thing in the 60’s. And now to find out Latinos also were segregated. They don’t teach us this history in school btw. At least not in Texas.

My great -grandma said they had Italians and Jews separated as well. There were yt schools and Italians, Mexicans, Jews etc were with us. Acres home Houston Texas

Your Grandma reminds me of my grandma 🥺 She was Spanish/Apache & her grade school stories were crazy. They would be hit with switches for speaking Spanish. I miss her. Thanks for posting!

Very interesting! Thanks for sharing your past. I’m full Cuban. My parents remember the racism when they first got to Miami. Signs on apartments said “no children, no dogs, no Cubans”. That story has never left me.

We have so many living relatives who remember these horrors. It wasn't that long ago. Anyone who thinks that pain is from old wounds is in denial or an idiot. Her willingness to share her stories is beautiful and hopefully we learn and grow from it. 😭

this is always so interesting to me. my grandma was hawaiian/chinese but was treated as black because she was brown skinned, but my grandpa was full filipino with fair skin and hazel eyes so he was treated as white and when he joined the military they weren't allowed to be together.

On of the older guys I used to work with went to segregated schools. He had a photo and the kids with disabilities went to the black school/classroom too. (I think his was by class?) he had a little person in his class that was white.
