I found the end comforting because nature will carry on and heal the earth from all of the damage we’ve caused

Also what about the inference that the cop had sexually abused Jesse plemmons character when he was a child. I feel like most people glazed over that/ missed it.

I interpreted it as: both of our leads are isolated in some way from the broader world around them. One character is isolated from the world because he is afraid of the world and how the world impacts him. He’s trying to save humanity not for others, but for himself and his own glory and satisfaction. She’s trying to save humanity not out of love for humans but because of guilt (she said something about the emperor [who turned out to be herself] feeling guilty for beginning a sickness in humans) and she is isolated by her wealth. She lives in a big house all alone and only interacts with people she works with. At the end we see these LARGE groups of people dead while doing things in community. A bridal party on a wedding day. Large groups praying at a Mosque etc etc. Emma stones character could not see the beauty and goodness in humanity because while she was on earth her only goal was to focus on HER goal and she didn’t see the goodness and celebration happening in the world around her, she only saw the evil that came out of humanity. But if she explored the world she would have seen more goodness. Instead she thought she would put humans out of their misery doing vast amounts of harm in the name of doing good. He did the same thing, vast amounts of harm in the name of doing good (getting rid of the aliens)

It all has to do with the title. Bugonia references the ancient belief that cow carcasses spawn bee colonies. So farmers would sacrifice a cow to save/repopulate their colonies. This can have so many interpretations. But I like how screen rant put it: “In the real world, there is no simple solution to this problem. Indeed, Lanthimos reminds us, the simple solution from the world's perspective would be humanity suddenly disappearing off the face of the Earth. And that isn't going to happen, either. Bugonia, then, isn't trying to say that we're doomed. It's telling us that by indulging in magical thinking instead of tackling the cold, hard facts, we risk dooming ourselves.”

She didn’t kill everyone because of what Teddy did though. She did it because humans weren’t productive experiments. On the ship, they made that clear. It was a parallel to her position as an executive.

I think it’s to show how billionaires are a completely alien race to the average person. Here you are struggling to feed yourself day to day. Then there is this person. Who has money you couldn’t even understand. You two live in totally different worlds.

I feel similarly, but the movie is really, deeply, truly about bees. Bees in the movie are not nature, which is different from most other movies where bees stand in for nature. Bees in Bugonia are us.

"don't blame corporations actually it's our fault" is the worst read of this movie lmao. look up Marx theory of Alienation that is the central theme of the entire story. the ending was about finding common ground with other working class people or we're all going to die working for nothing. in the end there are no profits.

Completely agree!! I felt it was about us wanting to blame anybody or anything but ourselves for the damage we are doing to ourselves. We don’t want to look in the mirror and accept we are killing ourselves

And/or that you can be right about something/an issue but have absolutely no idea how to address or fix it, and in fact act in ways detrimental to that effort

Maybe I'm just ignorant, but it seemed very basic to me. They are the apiarists. When we kept destroying ourselves, they ended the hive.

My interpretation is that coorperations gaslight us into thinking that the way we currently live is normal. People are out here struggling but they make it seem like everything’s ok. This is why Teddy turns out to be right in the end because as a low level worker he can see the truth about how the average worker is treated. Exploited like the bees

disagree that the collective “we” are equal to or as big an issue as the corporate evil and greed stones character represents. i definitely feel that responsibility of destruction on the world rests mostly on the shoulders of the 1%

I agree BUT I do think it is still saying corporations are bad - let's not forget that corporations are a human invention, made up of humans! the point is that michelle wasnt a villain bc she was an alien, she was a villain bc she was the CEO of a company that ruined teddy's life in its pursuit of profit. the aliens are better seen as an allegory for religion or a vengeful god - something to blame or hope will save us. when in reality, only we are to blame, and only we can save ourselves.
