I think some people are missing the “personal” part in personal curriculum - I’ve seen quite a few that seem copy paste and I agree, if you’re not interested in those topics the curriculum will feel like a drag.

people get offended when i say that if you want to learn about literature, you need to study it, just reading is not enough, pay attention to your literature teachers, read essays, learn about the time period…

I've also noticed that a lot of these personal curriculums don't have a homework or final assignment element. it's all passive learning, but nothing to test or express what you've learnt and observed. Something like that one artist on here that made a skill tree around glassblowing with projects would help retain all those knowledge better

I also think they choose subjects that are not particularly passionate about., but rather seemed 'intelligent' instead of having a pre knowledge on it, so don't know how to source their material .

This actually made me reconsider stuff because I want to learn a lot from a lot of topics but they seem so varied I cannot think where to start but now you changed my perspective, I want to be an animator sure but what technique should I use? I love 2-D and 3-D with handrawn elements so I should stick to these by studying art books from shows and movies with these sort of elements. I want to tell stories and most of them enter the suspense and tragicomedy so I should learn how to write thriller, comedy and drama scripts for TV since television is where I feel more comfortable showing a story. I want to learn how to sing, how to design clothes for my characters and how to apply color theory so I want to practice dramatic singing in Spanish music and theater, pick up books on modern alternative fashion on the internet and watch Asian social media since most artists there use pastels with a technique I want to adapt to my own style. I know it might be a lot but narrow it down and making it niche would be great steps to try them out and see if it is my thing and can improve on it

I’ve been wanting to ‘study’ gothic literature but there’s so much out there, I struggle with what to choose (so of course it’s every book you’ve ever mentioned on my ‘to-read’ list 😂). But you’ve given me more of a manageable structure to work with so thank you! PS please feel free to share a list of what you would highly recommend for a curriculum if you have the time ❤

I’m really into the idea of Charlotte Mason- always have a “light” book (something you read for fun), a “medium” book (something you’re interested in learning about, written by someone who has done that thing), and a “heavy” book (which would be one of those dense books you speak about first). This heavy books are for deep thinking and pondering. You take them in small chunks.

this made me realise I’ve been doing personal curriculums for years, I’ve been thinking of them as periods of focused interest but I do exactly what you’ve said - read a book, read about the book, visit somewhere, watch documentary, talk about it! Lol

I feel so uniquely privileged to have studied english in college when I see those personal curriculum videos because I got to have that learning experience in a structured, guided, collaborative environment. these are great tips to mimic the actual structure of a semester class! overloading yourself with just dense text is a grueling way to learn lol

It’s almost like ordinary people lack the skills necessary to put together a “curriculum”. In one of the university courses I teach, the final assignment is to create “the missing task” so to create a lesson, complete with a topic that fits the course, reading material, explanations and exercises. It’s the assignment that students are most uncomfortable with because until that point they have only passively learned and never thought about taking ownership of their own studies, nor what it takes to understand information enough to manipulate it (and therefore teach it, to yourself or others). We do it so we can try to give them the skills necessary to learn how to learn.

i think you are spot on. ive been writing detective fiction for over a decade but a year or so ago i started collecting detective novels from 1880-1910s. most recently i started a small collection of 1930s-50s detective magazines. I also listen to documentaries/ yt/ tiktok videos on film noir to neon noir, and even video games with detective/mystery elements. It opens up such a rounded view in how my niche is used and seen in media.

maybe it's the tism but if a book doesn't teach me something new in the most historically, scientifically, sociopolitically, spiritually dense way I genuinely can't get into it. my fav rn is the principia mathematica and I'm stopping every page or so to digest and replicate the theory and make my own hypothesis for a lil fun.

Ok, I now greatly desire a list of video game suggestions. Let’s start gothic, and maybe UK folklore? Also thanks for mentioning video games at all. I feel they often get overlooked yet they are amazingly well crafted stories and worlds, and, in my humble opinion, offer a level of immersion that other mediums do not.
