You’re supposed to wipe off the old oil and then apply the new oil.

I keep the the valve in the casing while I oil them so all the access oil doesn’t go to waste

I’ll try it. Following you has been so valuable. I’ve been playing 55 years. Tonight I learned a new way to oil my valves. Over the last few months you have turned me on to music that I have not heard before and have now added to my library for pieces to learn, and you have jogged my memory to practice pieces I last played in my early twenties. I hope you come to New England some time to do a concert so I can thank you in person for that. I bought myself a great trumpet a year ago and have a great piccolo coming in any day now and I am working on really getting my game back after too many years of conducting choirs and playing hymns, plus the occasional baroque piece at Christmas and Easter. You have been a wealth of information in finding new trumpet pieces to learn, and I’m really loving playing these days

I’ve been twisting my valves since 1988… I still twist and both my trumpet and cornet still works as the good Lord intended them to.

Haven’t used valve oil in years. Clean the valves and guides with warm soapy water rinse, keep the valves moist and clean and they work like a dream
