@jessnuremberg: Here’s what I wish I knew about getting your IVF covered by insurance. You first want to ask your plan how they define infertility — it varies by health care provider. For instance, before you get approved for IVF coverage, some plans require that you’ve tried for 6 months in a heterosexual relationship if over age 35. If you’re a single mom by choice or queer, you may need to have completed up to 6 IUIs before your coverage kicks in. It’s so important to know this before you start your journey. When you call your insurance company, ask: 1. How does my plan define infertility? 2. Do I have to try for a certain period of time (e.g., 6 or 12 months) before I’m considered infertile? 3. How many IUI cycles do I have to complete before IVF is covered? 4. Do the IUI cycles have to be medicated, or do unmedicated/home IUIs count?
