Ron Howard Reveals The Tough-Guy Disguise He Wore In Public At The Height Of Happy Days Fame Ron Howard was once so famous that he had to go incognito. The Oscar-winning director, 72, shared the story at the Hamptons International Film Festival on Saturday, Oct. 10. He played Richie Cunningham on Happy Days, which ran from 1974 to 1984. “The show was so popular that you’d sort of have to wear little disguises,” he said. “If you wanted to go to a mall or go to Disneyland or go out to the movies even, you had to lay low.” His go-to look was a leather jacket, “not a Fonzie leather jacket,” but a ’50s motorcycle cop style. He let his hair grow, tried for a mustache and wore shades. “My disguise was simply to try to be a little bit tough,” he said. Howard said the pandemonium around the show was “another thing that pushed me to want to get behind the camera.” He directed his first film, Grand Theft Auto, in 1977, when he was newly 23. Looking back, he said he would tell his younger self to “chill.” He said, “I felt like I had to have every answer.” Over time, he learned that people want a leader, but that he “didn’t have to have all the answers.” Howard also said he never felt limited by being called the “nicest guy in Hollywood.” He said, “It’s nice to be thought of as a decent fella.” He was at the festival to promote his documentary Avedon, coming soon to Netflix.
