When the tradition names that proud spirit Lucifer it does so to express this paradox a bright being who extinguishes his own brightness by exalting himself above the source of light. To understand this is to engage the historical and philosophical depth of the symbol. One may reject the faith but one cannot sever the symbol from the tradition that shaped it. Philosophy begins with honesty and ends with coherence and both point to the same conclusion the ancient meaning of Lucifer is inseparable from a fall freely chosen.
