Cyclospora is a microscopic intestinal parasite that’s been linked to contaminated fresh produce, including bagged salads, leafy greens, herbs, berries, and certain raw fruits and veggies. 🥬 Watch for these symptoms: • Persistent watery diarrhea • Severe bloating and gas • Abdominal cramps • Nausea • Fatigue • Loss of appetite • Unexplained weight loss 💩 Unlike a typical “24-hour stomach bug,” Cyclospora can linger for weeks if it’s not recognized and treated. 🪱 At this point, we do not know the exact origin of the 2026 outbreak. That’s the most important message. Here’s what investigators know so far: * 🥬 Fresh lettuce and salad greens are the leading suspects, particularly in outbreaks centered in Michigan and neighboring states. However, the FDA and CDC have not confirmed a single grower, supplier, farm, or brand. 🙅🏻‍♀️ Don’t self-diagnose. Don’t self-treat. One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming every parasite responds to the same medication. 🦠 Despite its effectiveness against some parasites, ivermectin nor mebendazole are not established treatments for Cyclospora. The treatment with the strongest evidence is the antibiotic trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX), prescribed by a healthcare professional. Taking the wrong med could delay appropriate treatment and worsen the course. 👩🏻‍⚕️ TMP-SMX blocks two key enzymes. By blocking folate production, the parasite cannot synthesize DNA or divide, so it dies or stops reproducing. ❌ The parasite is spread when human fecal contamination reaches food or water. Cyclospora is a human-only parasite. It is not carried by cows, chickens, pigs, or other livestock.
