Girl I’m trying not to allow this to happen to me and my siblings it’s been two years since mum passed. And we’re all on our healing journeys but I refuse the distance that grief tends to hold on people.

Ali Baba (1956 - 2004). The first Hausa superstar from Northern Cameroon. In the 1980’s, a young dandy singer made his solo debut on Cameroon’s state television at the time known as CTV to the tune of “Tcha Tcha Merengue”. Ali Baba né Ahmadou Baba Ali was born in 1956 in Garua. Often lauded for his flashy costumes and dance moves, Ali Baba was more than an entertainer as he dabbled between painting and acrobatics. His involvement with the National Orchestra of Cameroon did not deter him from successfully establishing himself as one of the pillars for the modernization sahelian music from Northern Cameroon. He coined his musical style Goumba Soul Gandjal, a fusion he credited to Soul, Disco, Funk, Rock, Makossa (popular Cameroonian dance music of 80’s), but most importantly, with a conspicuous base of the Hausa and Fulani rhythms. His distinguished virtuosic abilities made him to be frequently compared to the likes of Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade from Nigeria. Unfortunately for Ali baba, his musical prowess and artistry did not peak as he was slowed down by his deteriorating health. He became a shadow of his former glory when in 1993 he suffered a stroke which paralysed his right arm and was a victim of kidney failure which consequently took his life in 2004. In between the years of his illness, he released two albums: I AM HEALED in 1996, and KANO in 2001. Ali Baba died in Yaoundé leaving behind his young wife and child. For me, his style of music is very similar to the late Hausa singer from Niger, Saadou Bori. #hausa #africanmusic #africanmusicworldwide #michaeljackson
