[fiction ≠ reality] Winter used to think that loving someone meant learning every little thing about them, from their favorite song to the way they took their coffee. She thought that if she paid enough attention, she would eventually know Karina by heart. Then winter came, and she learned that sometimes, love meant something as simple as remembering where someone had left their hearing aids. It was a quiet morning when Winter found Karina sitting on the edge of their bed, her hair falling messily over her shoulders as she searched through the blankets for the little pink case. “Baby, have you seen my—” Winter stopped when Karina looked up at her. Right. She couldn't hear her. Without another word, Winter walked over and crouched in front of her. She gently tucked Karina's hair behind her ear before signing, “What are we looking for?” Karina's face softened with relief. She signed back, “My hearing aids. I can't remember where I put them last night.” Winter smiled and kissed her forehead. ‘I'll help you find them.’ They searched the bedroom first, then the bathroom, then the little table beside the couch. Karina grew increasingly frustrated with herself, and Winter noticed how she kept pressing her lips together whenever another place turned up empty. Eventually, Winter took both of Karina's hands in hers. ’Hey. Look at me.’ Karina did. ’It's okay. We have all morning.’ Karina stared at her for a moment before letting out a small laugh. She signed, “You're going to be late because of me.” Winter shook her head, then pointed toward the clock and signed, “I would rather be late than leave you sitting here looking like you're about to declare war on our furniture.“ Karina laughed harder at that, her shoulders shaking as Winter grinned proudly at herself. They eventually found the hearing aids on the living room windowsill, right beside a little vase of dried flowers Karina had arranged the previous week. Winter held them up like she had discovered buried treasure. Karina clapped her hands once, smiling so brightly that Winter almost forgot what she had been about to say. Almost. Once Karina had put them on, Winter sat beside her on the couch. Outside, the snow-covered garden stretched beneath a pale morning sky. The house was warm, and the only sound was the faint hum of the heater. “Can you hear me now?” Winter asked. Karina turned toward her. “A little. You’re still mumbling.” “I am not mumbling.” “You are. You talk like you’re keeping a secret from the entire world.” “Maybe I am.” Karina tilted her head. “What secret?” Winter leaned closer, her smile turning shy in a way Karina rarely got to see. “That I like you a ridiculous amount.” Karina rolled her eyes, but her cheeks turned pink. “You tell me that every day.” “And I’ll tell you tomorrow, too.” “You’re so cheesy.” “Yet you married me.” Karina reached for Winter’s hand, threading their fingers together beneath the blanket. “Unfortunately.” Winter gasped, pretending to be offended, and Karina laughed before leaning her head against her shoulder. For a while, neither of them spoke. Winter had once worried about silence. She used to fill every quiet moment with questions, stories, and little observations because she thought being a good partner meant always having something to offer. But Karina had taught her that silence wasn't always an empty space waiting to be filled. Sometimes, it was a place to rest. A place where Karina could close her eyes without worrying about missing something important. A place where Winter could hold her hand without asking her to look up, smile, or explain what was on her mind. And when Karina eventually lifted her head, she signed something Winter had spent months learning to recognize. ’I love you.’ Winter answered carefully, her hands moving a little slower than Karina's, but with all the certainty in the world. “I love you, too.” Karina watched her fingers, then reached up to straighten the collar of Winter's sweater. “You're getting better,” she murmured. — comsec #winrina #fiction #fyp
