Treating a giraffe is a high-stakes operation. Immobilisation is essential, given their size and strength — but on the flip side, a full anaesthetic is dangerous, due to their height and physiology. Thus begins a delicate dance. This treatment unfolded last week, after Wildlife Works reported two snared animals on Rukinga Ranch. The giraffe had a cable snare around his neck; a favoured weapon of poachers. The patient was darted from the air. As soon as he showed signs of sedation, teams moved in and roped his legs, enabling them to lower him to the ground. Once down, his head was held secure: Giraffes need to swing their head in order to get to their feet. Fortunately, the snare had not yet cut into the skin — but left untended, it could have caused a lethal injury. Because of eagle-eyed rangers and a speedy response, the snare was removed and he was spared such a fate.
