@vermilionvixenmain: Because if I pay for your tools and you leave, why should I keep reimbursing techs for their own tools if they can leave and take those tools at any point. Am I wrong?

Specialty tools are shop tools, basic tools like sockets wrenches etc are on the tech

depends on the technicians salary. techs don't normally make a huge hourly wage, that's where the argument is in my mind.

No where should buy there mechanics tools however I have worked in a few that do buy the tools but there’s a catch to keep them. Must be there 2-3 years. Now that I’d encourage would definitely keep more techs around. See so many techs quit because even the cheap tools are to expensive on top of whatever else they are struggling with

Im ngl i have mixed feelings cus i bought all the tools i have and i treat them with respect cus i payed my hard earned money but i have a coworker where our shop boss gave him his old tool box and he treats it like straight shit so I’m like Ik if he bought his own box he wouldn’t treat it like this so I have mixed signals cus ik not everyone like that

like where I work .. I buy my own hand tools but the shop buys the subscription to ford and specialty tools.. I also have my engine hoist there only because I don't have room for it at home.

I live in the Netherlands and we get filled work boxes, but I personally think we should buy it ourselves because then you are more careful with the stuff

The last shop I worked at actually did a pretty cool thing, but only if you start as a lube tech with no experience. They would get them a harbor freight roll around and the. A basic set of tools and an impact. Then they would deduct a small amount every check and by the time you get ready to move to main shop your basic tools and roll around would be paid off

I agree with you, I think techs should pay for basic tools and and sockets, shop should pay specialty tools. IF the tech were to ever leave, then they have their own property to start in a new shop.

So people who don't have their own tools get paid less, people who have them get paid more. TBH I don't know many mechanics that don't have their own tools as most do private work also.

I believe in a privately owned shop. Everybody should have their own tools.
