@tcburkej: Gangs of New York was a movie about Christian nationalism and so when I see Irish and Italian Americans sharing Christian nationalist rhetoric it confuses me because of the discrimination that their ancestors faced while assimilating into American culture. This country was built on the backs of immigrants who came to find a better life for their families and this country offered the freedom and capitol to allow them to do so

Yes. My great-grandparents had to keep paperwork identifying them as “enemy aliens” during WW1. Because they were German-Americans. Yet a lot of my mom’s generation are RABIDLY conservative. Like did they not know their own family history?

In high school history class we watched this, Schindler's List, and Glory. Our teacher had us read a paper for each movie and relate it to present day (2003) and how it connects to you or your family. I have a list of movies my kids will watch to help educate them on history and why we are anti-maga views

There seems to be a misunderstanding of assimilation. Some groups, because of color, are considered American sooner than others. Some of us are more or less palatable. We can’t just assimilate and me considered American, even after generations.

Italian Americans traded in our history for the privilege of “whiteness” I can’t speak to the Irish but I imagine something similar. This is how we forgot our roots in the American dream and I genuinely hope and pray we can move beyond that categorization and return to our actual cultures
