It has not even been half a year that Nharu King Red Road has disappeared… It felt weird to be back in the Manyeleti in July without seeing him. I see a lot of posts on social media in his memory. This shows how much it meant to so many people. For some, he was simply a great warrior, and some even say that he stayed undefeated until that last encounter that no one has seen - probably with the Mantimahles, but we will never know for sure - that led into his disappearance. No doubt, he has fought his fair share of fights in his life. His battle-scared face, especially is nose, was telling a story of such encounters. While Red Road for sure was an experienced warrior, he was not an undefeated one! I am going back in time to October 2021, with the 3 Tintswalo males back with their natal pride, the Mbiris. Boundaries were about to be tested, which ended in a clash between Red Road and the Mbiri brothers Ncila and Mandevu. They may have sensed they were half-brothers as none of them caused life-altering injuries to the other one. Mandevu ended with bite wounds on one hind leg, Ncila got scratches on his face. Red Road was the one with more severe injuries to his right hind leg that made walking hard for quite a while as the flesh was separated from the muscle. Often, a pride will take care of an injured member, but not if that injured member was their ruler and protector. An injured member whose main role it is to roam the territory in order to protect the pride - and occasionally help in bringing down a big animal - could feel like a burden and therefore get rejected by his own lionesses. And this is exactly what happened to Red Road in October 2021. And I am sure, he learned a very important lesson back then: my lionesses have to be content with what I do and can do in order to be a successful king. No doubt, the life-altering injuries Ncila suffered when ending up in a snare a few months later, keeping him weakened for more than a year, has also lowered the chances of Red Road having to face serious attempts of a take-over of his territory and pride. Excerpt from TintswaloVirtualSafari #221 from Oct. 21, 2021. #redroad #lion #the4koerners
