@science.sam: try it!!!! (Just don’t show your work for this one…) Every credit card # follows this rule, called the Luhn algorithm. What a thrill to have THE math queen @Kyne on the latest episode of the Curiosity Weekly podcast. Even if you think you hate math, you’ll love this episode I promise! Give it a listen wherever you listen to things 🫶🏼 #Science #math #funfacts

Most importantly, the algorithm makes it so if you mistype a number, you don't accidentally type someone else's number.

I was shocked that the social security numbers don’t have this type of security. Which is why it can get stolen so easily

But wait, what if somone accidentally types in an even digit incorrectly but gets all the odd digits correct?

I feel like we should teach this kind of math in schools. Applied math is much easier to grasp than math theory and its more practical

My favourite class as an undergrad was number theory. That’s where I learned mod math and the check num.

This is the reason why I lock my cards all the time after two of them got compromised despite my best efforts to protect myself. Sometimes banks get lazy and just replace your card with one that has the last two digits different, but there is only a finite number of digits that would satisfy the Luhn algorithm which makes it easy for your card to get compromised again 🥲 I know this because one of my cards got compromised twice.

So does this mean that one in ten times that you make an input error, the algorithm will give a false positive?
