Als Deutscher werde ich nie verstehen, wie ich damals Artikel gelernt habe. Oder wie ein Fremdsprachiger jemals deutsche Artikel lernen kann. Es macht einfach überhaupt keinen Sinn.

moon is masculine because the norse god of the moon is a man and the sun is female because the norse goddess of the sun is a woman

Like Mother Earth or Mother Nature, the sun also has that kind of aura in many cultures, I think it makes total sense for the sun to be feminine

in Germanic folklore, ancient gods and such. the gods took two children, a brother and sister, and gave them the tasks to drive the Sun and Moon across the sky. the Sun was given to the girl, while the boy was given the harder job of driving the moon. its harder because he has to turn the moon as he drives....all the while both are being chased by wolves. is this why? I have no idea, but it explained things to me.

Sun gives all the light and warmth while the moon only mooches off of that and reflects the sun's light. Seems right.

Wir haben im Lateinunterricht folgende Erklärung bekommen: Im Mittelmeerraum liegt der Fokus auf der zerstörerischen brennenden Kraft der Sonne. Ausgetrocknete Erde, Wassermangel, Hitze. Im germanischen Raum ist die Sonne sanft, lässt die Felder sprießen, sorgt für Nahrung etc.

Similar in Greek: το κορίτσι (neuter) for girl. But also αγόρι (neuter) for boy.

With numbers, I believe it's because of the implied word "Nummer". . . die (Nummer) Eins, die (Nummer) Zwei, usw.

I think what’s more interesting is what does the gendering inadvertently rewire the brain to believe about gender. Are there more women in STEM in German because numbers are feminine? I’ve dated German men and they seem less masculine obsessed than British, Australian or American men. Maybe not being the standby fork does something?!?!?!
