*Airforce Doctor* *Suffering Is Not A Sign Of Progress - Don't Be Gaslighted* Somewhere along the way, we were taught to romanticize suffering. We were told that if it hurts badly enough, it must be building character. That if we are exhausted, we must be working hard. *That if we are constantly broke, struggling and sacrificing, we must be "in the process."* That if a job is destroying our peace, we should simply endure because "success doesn't come easy." That if a relationship repeatedly breaks us, we should stay because "every relationship has challenges." That if an organization keeps exploiting us, we should remain because "great things require sacrifice." And if we dare to complain, someone quickly reminds us: "Don't give up. This is your season of preparation." Really? *Who told you that suffering is automatically evidence of progress?* Let's be honest. *There is a difference between productive discomfort and destructive suffering.* Growth can be uncomfortable. Learning something new can frustrate you. Building a business can stretch you. Training for excellence can exhaust you. Saving money can require temporary sacrifices. Leaving your comfort zone can make you uncomfortable. *But discomfort with a purpose, direction and reasonable endpoint is very different from suffering that simply keeps consuming your life.* You can work hard and still be heading in the wrong direction. You can sacrifice for years and still be sacrificing for something that is destroying you. *You can be busy every day and still be making absolutely no meaningful progress.* You can be loyal to a system that has no intention of rewarding your loyalty. *And you can become so accustomed to suffering that you start calling it normal.* That is where gaslighting begins. People sometimes make you feel guilty for questioning circumstances that are hurting you. "Everybody is suffering." "That's how the industry works." "Nobody said it would be easy." "Be grateful you have something." "You need to pay your dues." "Stop complaining." "Just endure." But endurance is not always wisdom. *Sometimes endurance is simply fear wearing the clothes of patience.* There are people who have spent ten years enduring what they should have confronted in the first year. *There are people who call themselves resilient when, in reality, they have simply become comfortable with being mistreated.* There are people celebrating how much they can tolerate when the real question should be: Why am I tolerating this in the first place? Progress should not be measured only by how much pain you can withstand. Sometimes progress looks like earning more. Sometimes it looks like gaining competence. Sometimes it looks like becoming healthier. Sometimes it looks like acquiring freedom. Sometimes it looks like moving into a better environment. Sometimes it looks like setting a boundary. Sometimes it looks like walking away. And sometimes, perhaps most importantly, progress looks like admitting: "This isn't working anymore." *There is nothing noble about remaining permanently exhausted just to prove that you are strong.* There is nothing heroic about being perpetually broke because you are afraid to change direction. *There is nothing admirable about destroying your health to impress people who will replace you the moment you collapse.* *There is nothing spiritual about accepting exploitation.* *There is nothing courageous about repeatedly choosing misery because someone convinced you that suffering is the price of success.* Sacrifice should produce something. If you sacrifice today, there should ideally be something tomorrow that the sacrifice is helping to create. Education should create competence. Discipline should create capacity. Hard work should create value. Saving should create financial resilience. *Temporary discomfort should move you toward a better destination.* If the sacrifice produces nothing but more sacrifice, pause. Ask questions. Don't let anybody shame you for asking them. *And this is particularly important in our society, where people
