Nao'e Crown, officially named Moth-Darting-Among-Flowers Headdress, is a legendary Chinese ancient gold filigree ornament. The most famous surviving artifact was unearthed from the tomb of Li Jingxun of the Sui Dynasty, a noble girl who passed away at merely nine years old.now collected at the National Museum of China. Li Jingxun was the beloved granddaughter of Yang Lihua, Princess Leping of the Sui Dynasty. The young girl died suddenly in 608 AD. Overwhelmed with grief, Yang Lihua broke imperial burial rules and arranged an extravagant funeral. On the stone sarcophagus, four striking characters were carved: Whoever opens this shall die. For more than 1,400 years, this ominous warning kept grave robbers away, safeguarding over 230 priceless burial relics intact, including this headdress. As a classic seasonal headwear popular from Sui to Song dynasties, it was mainly worn by ladies on Lantern Festival and Lichun. Artisans adopt consummate metalworking techniques: hammering, wire drawing, filigree weaving, chasing and gem inlay. The top of the crown features a lifelike moth above clusters of golden flowers. Supported by flexible fine wires, the moth and blossoms tremble slightly when walking, creating the vivid scene of moths darting amid blooms. The hollow moth body can store aromatic spices. Culturally, the moth symbolizes vitality, renewal and blessings for prosperous offspring. Combining metal craftsmanship, aromatic culture and traditional festival customs, Nao'e Crown represents the peak of Sui goldsmith art and timeless oriental aesthetic ingenuity. #handwork #handmade #ancientchina #coutrylife #crafttok #intangibleculturalheritage #craft
