Yeah, that is condensation from the propanefumes, not moisture in the metal. Sorry to ruin the day for you. But! It certainly helps to preheat either way 😅

what is being released from the cold steel is hydrogen molecules. they interact with the oxygen in the air to create water. there never is water in steel.

Stupid question but how do you know what temp you’ve preheated to?

it's not water coming from the steel, water vapor is a byproduct of combustion, it's the water vapor condensing on the cold steel

The moisture doesn’t come from the steel. It’s from the condensation of the moisture in the air collecting on the steel. Water vapour is also a byproduct of combustion which adds to it. There’s no water in the actual material

There is no moisture leaving the steel. That’s a myth.

that water is a byproduct of burning a hydrocarbon(propane)

There is one reason you pre heat and that is to slow down cooling so the steel doesn't dissipate the heat to quickly and crack.

Common misconception with the moisture in the steel, moisture comes from the hydrocarbons from the flame, but pre heating is definitely the go helps prevent cold cracks

Pre heating does not help porosity 😂😂 maybe it’s that hard red millscale you didn’t grind off and you say it makes it stronger, well if you’re making a video giving people tips…. WHY does it make it stronger ?

Steel isn’t porous. It does not hold water.
