🌱 Imbolc 🌱 The first of the Celtic cross-quarter fire festivals that celebrates the slow stirrings of spring and the Gaelic goddess Brigid. Brigid is a well-known Goddess throughout Britain and Ireland, and her myths and legends are woven into the landscape and culture. Brigid was part of the Tuatha de danann, which is the name for the race of faeries that inhabit Ireland. She was the daughter of one of its chieftains, and there are many myths and legends that speak of her journey as part of the faery folk. Brigid is a spring goddess who was not just associated with fertility, but also animals, healing, smiting, poetry, the sun, and the hearth. She would be invoked by both farmers and midwives alike to ask for protection during a birth. Today, there are many sacred springs and wells dedicated to the Goddess, with one of the most famous sites situated in Kildere, Ireland. In Kildere, there is also a site of a sacred eternal flame, legend of which says that it was a Druidic place of worship and guarded by 9 priestesses. Brigid is still strongly celebrated all across Britain and Ireland, with festivals made in her honour and shrines created at Imbolc to invoke the goddess. Many people will celebrate Imbolc by making a Brigids cross out of reeds and rushes, visiting a sacred spring, baking bread and biscuits, and rekindling fires or lighting candles. The darkest part of the year is truly behind us, and it's time to welcome in a new season 🌱 Merry Imbolc! . . . . #paganism #brigid #celticgoddess #celticfestival #imbolc
