As someone who worked in a High school lunch room this is 100% true. We used to throw tons of food away so I started saving as much as I could for the kids who didn't have food for the other kids in the homes as well. I refused to throw kids food away and instead started putting money on their accounts so I wouldn't get fired but also so the kids could eat and not worry. Kids shouldn't worry about if they can eat the lunch they picked out vs getting a peanut butter jelly sandwich instead.

I remember me in the 80's with my .40 cent reduced lunch. i forgot my money and i panicked. i had no lunch 😭. they told me i couldn't charge my lunch because they knew i couldn't pay it
